The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a woman for allegedly stabbing her husband, an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, to death in Umuahia, the state capital, following a domestic dispute.
The deceased, identified as Chidiebere James, was serving at the Abia State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service before the tragic incident.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, said the suspect had been taken into custody.
“The suspect was promptly arrested and is being interrogated at the State CID for a case of murder,” he stated.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, February 16, 2026, at Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area.
An eyewitness and close family member told journalists that what began as a domestic disagreement escalated into violence, leading to the officer’s death. The source confirmed that the deceased’s body had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
According to accounts, tensions between the couple started on Sunday following an argument over their sick child and the officer’s alleged inability to provide funds for medical treatment. The dispute reportedly intensified after the wife allegedly discovered incriminating text messages on her husband’s phone and accused him of infidelity.
Family members, including the deceased’s sister, were said to have intervened and temporarily resolved the matter. However, the quarrel reportedly resumed early Monday morning inside their residence.
Sources said the renewed argument degenerated into a physical struggle during which the deceased’s mobile phone was damaged. In retaliation, he allegedly seized and destroyed his wife’s phone.
Angered by the destruction of her phone, the woman was said to have picked up a pair of scissors nearby and stabbed her husband. He reportedly collapsed shortly after and was later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The traditional ruler of Ekeoba Ancient Kingdom, HRH Iheanyi Nwokenna, popularly known as Oba The Great, confirmed awareness of the incident.
“I have just been told about it. I am just returning from a trip,” he said.
The development has thrown the Umuihi Umuogba community into mourning, with residents expressing concern over rising cases of domestic violence.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing.
