The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc (IBEDC) has apologised to its customers for the ongoing disruptions in electricity supply across its franchise, urging calm and dialogue amid rising protests.

In a statement on the current power situation, IBEDC explained that the outages and supply constraints are largely linked to challenges affecting electricity generation and the national grid.

The company highlighted that shortages in gas supply to power plants have significantly reduced electricity generation capacity nationwide, resulting in increased load shedding across its network.

IBEDC also noted a sharp rise in electricity demand within its coverage area in recent months, driven by the addition of more Band A feeders as mandated by regulatory directives. However, the electricity allocated to IBEDC from the national grid has remained inconsistent and, at times, declined, widening the gap between supply and demand.

“As a result of these constraints, some communities in our franchise are experiencing shortfalls in electricity supply. We fully understand the frustration this has caused and sincerely apologise for the disruptions to homes, businesses, and economic activities,” the statement said.

The company acknowledged that the prolonged supply challenges have sparked protests in some communities, with others threatening similar action. While recognising customers’ right to voice their grievances, IBEDC urged communities to seek dialogue instead of confrontation.

“We appeal to our valued customers and communities to embrace dialogue rather than protests. IBEDC has been engaging community leaders and stakeholders to foster understanding and work together on sustainable solutions,” the company added.

IBEDC further reassured customers that it is coordinating with stakeholders across the power sector to address energy allocation imbalances, restore stability to the national grid, and improve electricity supply within its franchise area.
