President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday paid tribute to mothers and women across Nigeria, recalling the sacrifices of his late mother whom he credited for shaping the person he is today.

Akpabio made the remarks in a message marking this year’s International Women’s Day, celebrated globally to recognise the achievements and contributions of women to society.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President described mothers as one of humanity’s greatest blessings, noting that his leadership journey was deeply influenced by his mother’s love, resilience and sacrifices.

He also acknowledged the vital role women play in nurturing families, sustaining communities and driving national development despite the challenges they often face.

“I am the greatest beneficiary of the love, care, compassion and sacrifice of a woman. My mother gave everything to raise me into the person I am today,” he said.

Akpabio expressed appreciation to Nigerian women for their contributions to families and society, congratulating them on the occasion of this year’s celebration.

“As a legislature, and in line with the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Give and Gain’, we remain committed to promoting greater investment in women in all spheres of life, particularly their participation in the economic and political processes of our country,” he added.

The Senate President, who rose from humble beginnings in Akwa Ibom State to serve as governor between 2007 and 2015 and now leads the 10th Senate, said his life story underscores the crucial role mothers play in shaping the future of their children and society.

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also highlighting the need for gender equality and increased inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making.

In Nigeria, advocates continue to push for greater female representation in politics and governance, particularly after several gender-related bills suffered setbacks in the National Assembly.

Akpabio’s message joins calls by political leaders and stakeholders for stronger support and investment in women as part of efforts to accelerate national development.
