The Niger State Government has directed all political appointees and public officials who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 23, 2026.
The directive was issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, following the release of the revised 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the schedule, presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2027.

Political parties are expected to begin their primaries on April 23, 2026.
Usman explained that the directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral regulations, which require public office holders seeking elective positions to resign at least one month before their party primaries.
He therefore advised all affected officials to submit their resignation letters before the March 23 deadline to avoid breaching the rules governing the electoral process.
“I am to draw the attention of all political appointees and other government officials who wish to contest elective offices that party primaries are expected to begin from April 23, 2026,” the SSG said.
“In line with this, such appointees and officials are advised to resign their appointments by March 23, 2026, in order to meet the one-month resignation requirement before contesting elective positions.”
Usman also reiterated the Niger State Government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that political activities comply with constitutional and electoral provisions.
