The death toll from a deadly ambush by armed gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area has risen to 13, Governor Nasir Idris confirmed on Wednesday. Initial reports had put the fatalities at nine soldiers and one policeman, but additional bodies have since been recovered.

Speaking during a visit to the scene alongside the Emir of Yauri, Alhaji Zayyanu Abdullahi, Governor Idris explained that the military had received intelligence about a planned bandit attack on a community and had mobilised to intervene. “Unfortunately, the information given to the military was incorrect. On their way, these notorious bandits laid an ambush and killed about 11 of them. It is a very sad situation,” he said.

The governor also visited the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where victims were receiving treatment. Idris described the attack as barbaric and assured that the state government would cover medical bills for the injured and support the families of the deceased security personnel.

“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect citizens,” he said, adding prayers for the souls of the fallen.

The attack comes amid persistent assaults by bandits and terrorist groups across northern Nigeria. In June 2025, 17 soldiers were killed during a gun battle in Mariga Local Government Area, while insurgent groups in the North-East, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, have repeatedly ambushed troops in Borno State, resulting in numerous fatalities.

Governor Idris later conducted an on-the-spot assessment at the attack site, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across Kebbi State.
