ONICCIMA RAISES ALARM OVER RISING MARKET FIRES IN ANAMBRA

Alarmed by the increasing spate of fire outbreaks destroying markets and livelihoods, the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA) has called for urgent preventive measures across Anambra State.
The appeal follows a recent fire that razed the Plumbing and Sanitary Wares Market at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, resulting in the loss of goods worth millions of naira.
In a statement by its President, Chinedu Nwokoye, the chamber expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents, describing them as a serious threat to traders, businesses, and the broader commercial environment in Anambra and the South-East.
ONICCIMA noted that the frequent outbreaks highlight the vulnerability of major markets and underscore the need for an effective and comprehensive fire management system.

The body also raised concerns over delayed emergency responses, questioning the capacity and preparedness of fire services, particularly in busy commercial centres like Onitsha.
It urged the state government to decentralise fire services by establishing well-equipped stations in Onitsha and other key markets to ensure quicker response times.
The chamber further called for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards, including mandatory installation of fire alarms, extinguishers, and other safety equipment in markets and commercial buildings.
It also recommended increased investment in fire hydrants, regular maintenance of facilities, and routine electrical inspections to reduce fire risks.
Additionally, ONICCIMA advised market associations to set up joint emergency response teams, implement fire alert systems, and organise regular drills and safety training for traders.
The group encouraged businesses to form neighbourhood safety networks, invest in shared fire-fighting resources, and collaborate with authorities on emergency preparedness.
Describing the repeated fire incidents as a wake-up call, ONICCIMA reaffirmed its readiness to work with stakeholders to drive policy reforms and infrastructure improvements aimed at safeguarding lives, businesses, and the state’s economy.
