Police in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested Goodluck Monday, a 400-level Private and Property Law student at the University of Abuja, for the alleged rape of a 21-year-old 100-level student, whose name has been withheld.
A colleague of the victim told our correspondent on Sunday that she first met the suspect at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, where he allegedly introduced himself as the chairman of the school’s NELFUND committee.
The source said the suspect, who appeared older than his age, allegedly gained the victim’s trust after she approached him about a friend’s NELFUND application, exchanging phone numbers with her.
The suspect reportedly later scheduled a meeting with the victim, asking her to choose a location between Giri and Gwagwalada.
“He scheduled a meeting with her and asked her to choose a location between Giri and Gwagwalada. She picked Giri, thinking it was convenient, unaware that it was actually his residence.
“Although he claimed that NELFUND matters never require visiting someone’s home, that was false. He insisted they meet privately, saying they had much to discuss. She followed him and his friend into the house.
“When she tried to leave, he told her she couldn’t. It was around 10 p.m., and she was extremely frightened. He showed her his ID, presenting himself as responsible and assuring her he wouldn’t harm her, but still refused to let her go.”
“She said that shortly after, he approached her and asked for a massage, which she refused. He insisted again, but she turned him down.
“She raised her voice, and he became angry, starting to touch her body.
“He promised to let her go but did not. He pressed her face to the ground and put his hand on her throat, making it difficult for her to breathe.
“Despite her cries for help, no one in the compound came out, although she could hear voices. She also tried calling a church member who is the man’s coursemate, but he did not answer.
“She said the man pinned her down, removed her pants, and assaulted her. He then took her phone and instructed her to clean up,” the student recounted.
The Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, University of Abuja chapter, in a memorandum dated March 28, 2026, stated that it was aware of the allegation involving a male member of the association and a female student who is not a member.
The association added that it had reached out to the complainant, who agreed to provide a written report to support the ongoing investigation.
Another student told our correspondent that the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Monday by officers from the Gwagwalada Division, noting that his arrest has eased tensions on campus.
“The man was arrested early Monday by police from the Gwagwalada Division. I heard he was planning to leave the area before being caught. His arrest has calmed the campus because some people were making similar allegations against him. If you check our WhatsApp platforms, you’ll see all sorts of claims about him,” the student said.
In a voice note reportedly sent to the victim after the incident, the suspect questioned why his phone number had been shared with people who threatened him.
He said, “You are not a child. I was thinking about how to raise money for you to buy food because you said you didn’t have anything. I sent you money this morning. What did I do to you? Even last night, when you slept at my place, did I disturb you? The help I gave you has turned you against me. Who sent you? What did I do to you? I offered to help, and over the past few days, I tried my best. Now you’re sending my number to people to threaten me; I don’t want to say anything.”
In a separate voice note to his campaign team, the suspect claimed that the allegation was connected to his political ambitions.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that investigations into the case are ongoing.
