The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two suspects, Yahaya Zubairu, 20, and Babangida Muhammad, 20, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Barhama Abubakar.

The development was disclosed in a statement to journalists in Bauchi, the state capital, on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib.

Habib said the suspects, who are relatives of the victim, lived in the same compound.

He added that the victim was kidnapped on March 21, 2026, and the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₦1,000,000.

However, the police quickly launched an operation that led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the victim’s decomposed body.

“The victim’s decomposed body was recovered, and a medical examination confirmed the death,” the statement read.

Habib stated that the suspects, Yahaya and Babangida, allegedly conspired to kidnap and kill the child, tying his neck and legs, which resulted in his death.

The Police Public Relations Officer stated, “Babangida, a cousin of the victim, lured him by sending him to buy a biscuit and deliver it at a designated primary school, where the two suspects intercepted him and took him to the scene of the crime.”

He added that the suspects confessed to the crime, explaining that “they targeted the victim’s father, believing he had substantial wealth.”

He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stating, “The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, calls on parents and guardians to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior.”

The Police Public Relations Officer further confirmed that “investigation is ongoing, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).”

The police command emphasized its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety and security of citizens.

Habib appealed to the public to provide information that could help arrest other suspects involved in similar crimes.

In a related development, the Oyo State Police Command in March re-arrested a suspected kidnapper who had previously escaped from custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, stated that the suspect was apprehended on March 17, 2026, at around 11:30 p.m. by operatives from the Ojongbodu Area Command during a routine stop-and-search patrol.
