Renowned singer Tems has revealed details of her experience in a toxic relationship, describing her partner as “obsessive and possessive.”

In an open interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the Essence singer explained that the relationship conflicted with her values, emphasizing her belief that a healthy relationship should be based on partnership, not control.

Tems added that toxic relationships can be emotionally draining, especially since some partners may not even realize their behavior is harmful.

“I’ve experienced relationships where I thought it was love, but it felt more like someone trying to control or own me. That’s not love.

“Love isn’t about obsession or possession. You can’t own another person. True love is when two people come together as one, sharing a connection rather than control.

“We don’t own each other; we are for each other. I think many people have gone through toxic love with someone who doesn’t even realize they’re being toxic.

“They claim to love you, yet they don’t truly know how to love, because love can’t exist where there’s a sense of ownership,” she shared.
