Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have arrested a suspected cultist, Emmanuel Keta, from Ogoja in Benue State, over the attempted murder of a Junior Secondary School 3 student.
The victim, identified as Naomi Monday of the Agbado community in Iguobazuwa, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State, was allegedly attacked at her residence.
According to reports, the suspect was initiated into a cult group in December 2025 and allegedly instructed to kill at least 11 youths as part of a process to gain elevation within the group.
He was said to have stormed the student’s home armed with a cutlass shortly after she returned from school, inflicting machete wounds on her without provocation.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said neighbours rescued the victim after hearing her cries for help, while the suspect fled the scene.
“The victim was the first target in his mission to secure promotion within the group,” the source said, adding that the suspect was later tracked down and arrested by ESSC operatives before being handed over to the police.
The victim’s elder sister, Esther Monday, has called for justice, revealing that Naomi is currently receiving treatment in hospital and remains in critical condition.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, described it as a case of attempted murder, noting that the suspect has confessed. She added that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
