Eight children were killed in a shooting early Sunday in the southern United States state of Louisiana, in what authorities believe was a case of domestic violence.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 a.m. local time in Shreveport and is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in the country in over two years, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Police said the suspected gunman, an adult male whose identity was not immediately released, was later killed following a car chase and confrontation with law enforcement. Officials said it was unclear whether he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or police fire, and confirmed that no officers were injured.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux told CNN that investigators are still determining the exact relationship between the suspect and two women who were also shot during the incident. Both women remain in critical condition and are unable to provide statements.
Police Corporal Chris Bordelon said the crime scene spanned three homes and involved what appeared to be a “domestic disturbance.” He added that victims ranged in age from one to 14 years old, and that some of the children were related to the suspect.
Authorities believe the gunman acted alone and was responsible for all the shootings at the various locations. At the second residence, nine children were present; one survived and is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials are continuing investigations and have yet to release full details pending notification of next of kin.
The tragedy has sparked widespread condemnation, with US Senator Bill Cassidy describing it as “horrific violence,” while Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he was “heartbroken.”
The United States continues to grapple with frequent gun violence, with thousands of deaths recorded annually due to widespread firearm access.
