ANAMBRA ANTI-TOUTING SQUAD ARRESTS SIX OVER ILLEGAL LEVIES, EXTORTION IN ONITSHA

The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency has arrested six suspects for alleged illegal revenue collection and extortion in parts of Anambra State.
The arrests were made during enforcement operations targeting touting and unauthorised levies, particularly in Onitsha and its environs.
Spokesperson for the agency, Karen James, said the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of illegal revenue agents and protect traders and commercial operators.
According to her, the suspects were apprehended for allegedly engaging in unlawful levy collection and extorting members of the public within designated areas.
“The agency remains committed to its statutory mandate of eradicating illegal revenue collection, extortion, and touting activities across the state,” she said.
The suspects were subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Onitsha North Local Government Area, where they were granted bail under stringent conditions.
The court set bail at a ₦200,000 bond, alongside a ₦300,000 fine and a Level 17 civil servant as surety. The case was adjourned to July 1, 2026, for further hearing.
Preliminary investigations, according to the agency, indicate that the suspects operated independently.
The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on illegal levies and extortion, warning that enforcement operations will be sustained across the state.
It also urged residents to report cases of harassment or illegal revenue collection, assuring that all reports would be treated confidentially.
