Two persons have been confirmed dead, while five others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle accident at Obere along the Ota-Idiroko Road in Ogun State.
The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, involved five vehicles, including a truck and commercial transport vehicles.
Spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed that the accident happened after a truck rammed into other vehicles along the expressway.
He identified the vehicles involved as a white MAN Diesel truck with number plate EKY 918 YC, an ash Suzuki minibus (AGL 81 YF), a yellow Suzuki minibus (LND 928 YD), and two yellow TVS tricycles with number plates AGL 781 QP and AAA 300 QV.
According to Akinbiyi, the crash was caused by loss of control, allegedly due to the driver falling asleep at the wheel and excessive speeding.
“Twenty-one people were involved in the accident, comprising nine males and 12 females. Five persons, including two males and three females, sustained injuries, while two male victims lost their lives,” he said.
He added that TRACE operatives, in collaboration with other emergency responders, managed traffic at the scene, while the injured victims were rescued and taken to hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Ilaro.
Akinbiyi further noted that the vehicles involved had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Road crashes remain a persistent concern along major highways in Ogun State, with authorities frequently attributing incidents to factors such as speeding, fatigue, and reckless driving.
