A Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to explain why N100.1 million awarded as judgment debt against the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and two others should not be released to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission and its chairman, Hashim Abioye.

The applicants, OSSIEC and Abioye, filed the suit marked FHC/OS/CS/41/2025 through their counsel, I.T. Tewogbade, contending that the judgment debtors had failed to comply with the court’s earlier ruling directing payment of damages.

Other respondents in the matter include the Police Service Commission, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The applicants asked the court to freeze funds belonging to the judgment debtors in accounts domiciled with the CBN, which is listed as the garnishee, to recover the N100.1 million judgment sum and costs awarded in the earlier decision.

Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi had, on November 17, 2025, awarded N100 million in damages and N100,000 in costs against the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, and the Police Service Commission over attempts to stop the February 22, 2025 local government election in Osun State.

The judge also ruled that the sealing of OSSIEC offices and the arrest of its personnel were unlawful, adding that the police failed to establish any legal basis for the actions taken against the electoral body before the election.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, counsel to the applicants moved the ex parte motion and urged the court to grant the requested reliefs.

Among the reliefs sought was an order nisi directing the CBN to show cause why funds belonging to the judgment debtors, including allocations in the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account, should not be used to settle the outstanding judgment debt and costs awarded by the court.

Delivering her ruling, Justice Demi-Ajayi granted the requests, stating, “Orders granted as prayed.”
