Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has spoken about his past struggle with smoking addiction and how he eventually overcame it.

In a recent episode of MENtality featuring singer Banky W and social media influencer Aproko Doctor, Ebuka disclosed that he began smoking in JSS3.

He revealed that the habit lasted for 13 years, during which he smoked up to two packs of cigarettes daily.

“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I got to university, I was smoking two packs a day. I was a heavy smoker,” he recalled.

Ebuka said he was eventually able to quit after making a conscious decision and putting in deliberate effort to break the addiction.

Banky W also shared his own experience, revealing that he developed an addiction to pornography while attempting to overcome promiscuity.

He explained that he mistakenly believed replacing one habit with another would help him manage his behaviour.

“I was trying to battle pornography and decided that instead of moving from woman to woman, I should just be watching pornography,” he said.

Ebuka noted that many people fall into similar patterns of substituting one addiction for another in an attempt to cope.

Aproko Doctor, on his part, said many addictive behaviours stem from people trying to escape emotional pain.

He explained that human behaviour is often driven by the desire to avoid pain or seek pleasure, adding that substance abuse is frequently linked to emotional escape.

The trio emphasised the importance of self-control and self-awareness in overcoming harmful addictions.
