An aspirant in the 2027 Akwa Ibom governorship election, Senator John James Udoedehe, has said worsening poverty, unemployment and inequality in the state pushed him into the race.

Speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Thursday, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain lamented that despite huge allocations received by the state government, residents continue to grapple with hardship.

Udoedehe said he is fully prepared to improve the living conditions of the people by creating jobs, boosting wealth creation and narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor.

He argued that any government that fails to tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment has failed in its responsibility, stressing that the level of hardship in Akwa Ibom remains alarming.

The former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also questioned how previous budgets had impacted residents, insisting that poverty was still widespread despite increased revenues under the current administration.

Expressing confidence in the ADC’s chances in 2027, Udoedehe noted that he played a key role in establishing the APC in Akwa Ibom and said the ADC could achieve victory through effective grassroots mobilisation.

Responding to criticism over his repeated governorship ambitions, he maintained that he had only appeared on the ballot twice and would not be discouraged from contesting again.

He cited the eventual successes of Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo after several failed attempts as examples of perseverance in politics.

Udoedehe also dismissed claims that he was contesting merely to negotiate financial deals with the government before withdrawing from the race.

According to him, such allegations were false and aimed at blackmailing him, adding that he had endured persecution, including imprisonment, because of his political struggle.

He urged Akwa Ibom people to give him an opportunity to serve, expressing confidence that proper voter enlightenment would work in his favour ahead of the 2027 election.
