The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has condemned the alleged shooting incident involving a motorist identified as an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) during a routine traffic operation in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the agency, the incident happened on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at about 3:20 p.m. near the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command in Abuja after an FRSC patrol team stopped a Toyota Carina driver over an alleged traffic violation.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the driver reportedly ignored lawful instructions to stop and continued driving recklessly before he was eventually halted by traffic congestion near the command office.
Officials said the situation worsened when officers approached the suspect for routine inspection of his vehicle and documents.
The agency alleged that the driver became aggressive, verbally attacked the officers and resisted the enforcement exercise.
According to the FRSC, despite attempts by personnel to de-escalate the situation professionally, the suspect allegedly moved toward the officers, pulled out a pistol and fired two shots within the command area.
The statement noted that FRSC personnel responded with restraint and professionalism, successfully disarming the suspect without any loss of life, although one marshal sustained minor injuries during the process.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to officers at the Nigeria Police Force station in Life Camp alongside the firearm, ammunition and the vehicle involved.
The FRSC said preliminary investigations identified the suspect as a DSS operative, adding that the matter has been transferred to the appropriate state command for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, Corps Marshal Mohammed commended FRSC officers for their calm and disciplined conduct despite the tension.
He stressed that no individual, including security operatives, is above the law and urged all personnel to respect traffic regulations and constituted authority.
The FRSC boss also warned against the misuse of firearms and official influence to intimidate law enforcement officers carrying out legitimate duties.
The Corps further called for improved cooperation and mutual respect among security agencies to strengthen public safety and national security.
