FMR SEC DG, GWARZO GRANTED BAIL
Suspended Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission Muniru Gwarzo has been granted bail by the FCT High Court.
Gwarzo who is standing trial alongside a commissioner of Security and Exchange Commission Zakawani Garuba was charged with criminal breach of trust, corrupt enrichment and abuse of office by the Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
Gwarzo who is the first defendant was alleged by ICPC to have corruptly collected over 104 million as severance allowance while still serving as the Director General of SEC. He was also accused of receiving 10million in excess of car grant while in office.
The second defendant Zakawani Garuba, a commissioner in SEC was charged with criminal breach of trust for approving the severance allowance for the first defendant.
Gwarzo pleaded not guilty to the charges. Counsel to the accused Mustapha AbdulHakeem who filed an application for bail asked the court to admit the first accused to bail as a respected person in the society who is willing to stand and clear his name.
Prosecution Counsel, Henry Emore did not oppose the bail application but asked the court to put conditions that will compel the accused come for trial.
Trial judge Hussein Yussuf granted the two accused persons bail in the sum of 25 million naira each with one surety that must not be below the rank of deputy director in the civil service. The surety must also be resident and has a landed property in ABUJA.
The case has been fixed for 28th/29th for trial.
