Report says the proprietor of the primary school apartment which was part of the 3-storey building that collapsed in the Itafaji area of Lagos Island is currently nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Building Control Authority, LAPCA has said preliminary investigations are still ongoing to find out the cause of the 30-year-old building collapse.
Speaking with hotjist.com , Chairperson of the Nigeria Institute of Civil Engineers (Lagos State Chapters), Lola Adetona revealed that the age of the building and the effect of the previous collapse of the same structure, may not be far from the reasons it came down again.
“An integrity test was conducted, so, it could have been an effect bfrom the previous collapse. I’m saying this according to an information I just received now, although we are still conducting more investigations. I’m not concluding that, that is the reason. We are still carrying out more investigations but, the most important thing now is to save lives,” she told Hotjist.
She also noted that efforts are still ongoing by several concerned government agencies to ensure the lives of the pupils are saved.
She also stated that intensive investigation reports will be made presented later.
Adetona however stated that more proactive measures should be employed by the government in order to prevent future occurrence, “Most importantly, civil engineers who have been trained in the structural behaviour of building elements have a clearer understanding of how the active and passive forces within a building operate. As such, they should be given preference when it comes to building construction especially for storey buildings”.
