OKADA BAN: SANWO-OLU PURSUE OKADA RIDERS INTO ARMY BARRACKS
Babajide Sanwo-olu, the governor of Lagos state, appears committed to enforcing the ban on the use of “okada,” in some areas of the state.
A reliable source claims that Sanwo-olu’s convoy pursued some disobedient okadas riders who tried to flee by running into the army Barracks. To everyone’s surprise, the convoy followed them into the Barracks and where Sanwo-olu ordered his men to seize the okadas.
The source claims that things got to the stage where the governor had an arguement with the military personnel.
Following a thorough assessment of the restrictions imposed on them on February 1, 2020, the governor provided an update on the restriction on okada activities in six local government areas of the state: Ikeja, Surulere, Etiosa, Lagos Island, Mainland, and Apapa, including highways and bridges.
Sanwo-olu stated: “We have seen that the menace has not abated and as a result we are now directing a total ban on Okada activities across the highways and bridges within these six local governments and their Local Council Development Areas, effective from June 1, 2022.” He also urged the Police to ensure that the ban was fully enforced.
The governor’s unexpected action came as a result of realising that some of the riders are still not taking the restriction seriously.
