The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the reported loss of more than 200 operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, as disturbing and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the party called on Governor Seyi Makinde to provide further clarification on the reported deaths of the operatives.
The APC said a detailed explanation was necessary to ensure better protection for Amotekun personnel and residents across the state.
The opposition party also criticised the alleged deployment of Amotekun operatives to guard private hotels, businesses, and properties linked to influential individuals, insisting that the corps should focus strictly on its primary security mandate.
According to the APC, the reported fatalities raise concerns about the state’s security situation and the welfare of personnel serving in the outfit.
The party further alleged that the state government had failed to establish effective collaboration between Amotekun and federal security agencies, a situation it said could undermine efforts to tackle crime.
It urged the Makinde administration to engage security experts, improve the corps’ operational capacity, and prioritise the recruitment of qualified personnel.
The APC also advocated regular training and retraining programmes, better welfare packages, and the provision of modern equipment to enhance the effectiveness and safety of Amotekun operatives in the line of duty.
