Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard will temporarily set aside their successful club partnership when England take on Norway in Saturday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final, with both midfielders expected to play decisive roles in one of the tournament’s most intriguing contests.
The duo were instrumental in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign, ending the club’s 22-year wait for the English top-flight crown. They also helped the Gunners reach the UEFA Champions League final, where they were narrowly beaten on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain.
Now representing their respective nations, Rice and Odegaard will go head-to-head as England and Norway battle for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Norway captain Odegaard has enjoyed an impressive tournament, registering three assists — a total bettered only by Michael Olise, Brahim Diaz and Bruno Guimaraes. According to FIFA, he has also covered plenty of ground, recording 229 sprints, the highest by any Norwegian player, while only Sander Berge has run a greater distance.
Rice has previously spoken glowingly about Odegaard’s leadership at Arsenal.
“He’s one of the best lads I’ve seen in terms of how he lives his life off the pitch,” Rice said in 2025.
“He’s got the full respect of the Arsenal dressing room, the way he demands, the way he drives the team, the way he speaks. He’s been amazing for us, and I wouldn’t want anyone else being our captain.”
Despite that admiration, Rice will be responsible for disrupting Odegaard’s creativity when the two sides meet.
The England midfielder has also impressed at the tournament, completing 91 percent of his 171 passes while providing defensive solidity and posing a threat from set-pieces.
Odegaard returned the compliments ahead of the clash, describing Rice as one of the most complete midfielders in world football.
“He’s someone who always gives absolutely everything for the team. He is always fighting for every single ball, bringing his energy to the pitch and driving the team forward,” Odegaard said.
“He can defend, he can attack, he can be physical, he can be good on the ball. He’s a very complete player, so it’s going to be a good test for all of us.”
England manager Thomas Tuchel also praised Rice’s influence on and off the pitch.
“He is one of the very best midfielders in the world,” Tuchel said.
“He is also very humble, a football lover. He is a team player and is ready every day to give energy and quality to the group. I am proud to be his coach.”
With both midfielders in top form, the quarter-final promises to be a fascinating battle as England pursue a first World Cup title since 1966, while Norway aim to extend their historic run after reaching the last eight for the first time.
