Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin with a cash reward of ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, in recognition of her outstanding performance at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.

The governor made the announcement during a civic reception in Akure on Monday, held in honour of Demehin and other Ondo State indigenes who contributed to Nigeria’s triumphant WAFCON campaign.

In addition to Demehin, Governor Aiyedatiwa also rewarded Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary, with N15 million each for their roles in the national team’s success.

“This is a proud moment for us,” the governor declared. “Tosin Demehin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her N30 million and a house.”

Demehin, who hails from Ilaje Local Government Area and played a crucial defensive role throughout the tournament, was lauded by the governor as a symbol of talent, discipline, and resilience.

“I am extremely delighted to welcome home our brave daughters,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Their dedication, hard work and team spirit helped secure this victory. You have not only brought glory to the nation but honoured Ondo State.”

He praised the vital contributions of Akinsola and Oduboku, both from the southern senatorial district, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and sports development in the state.

“We will continue to invest in young talents, create enabling environments, and provide the resources necessary for them to excel, especially in sports,” he added.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also pledged full support to Sunshine Stars Football Club, expressing hope for their swift return to the Nigerian Premier League. He extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for nationally recognizing the Super Falcons, noting the importance of such gestures for athlete morale nationwide.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Segun, assured the governor of continued progress in sports, while Ondo State Football Association Chairman, Dele Sunday Ajayi, hailed Aiyedatiwa as the first state governor to honour Super Falcons players and officials from his state, calling it a strong motivator for aspiring athletes.

In her response, Tosin Demehin expressed deep gratitude to the governor and the people of Ondo State.

“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me,” she said. “As a former Sunshine Queens player, I know there is massive potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls with dreams like mine.”

She urged stakeholders to unite behind the development of women’s football, emphasizing that the growth of Nigerian football male and female requires collective responsibility.
