The Senate on Wednesday approved constitutional amendments paving the way for the establishment of state police across Nigeria.
The bill was passed after lawmakers considered and voted on the proposed framework during plenary.
Before the vote, senators agreed to adopt a manual voting process after the chamber’s electronic voting system developed a technical fault.
The decision followed concerns that relying on the malfunctioning device could prevent some lawmakers from participating in the voting process.
Under the manual voting arrangement, senators were required to stand individually, state their names and publicly indicate their positions on the state police proposal.
The motion seeking the adoption of manual voting was moved by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and subsequently approved by the chamber.
The passage of the constitutional amendment marks a significant step toward the creation of state police, a proposal that has generated widespread debate over its potential impact on security and policing in the country.
