COURT REJECTS NNAMDI KANU’S BID FOR TRANSFER FROM SOKOTO PRISON TO ABUJA OR NASARAWA
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has refused an application filed by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, seeking his transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a custodial facility within the Federal Capital Territory or neighbouring Nasarawa State.
Kanu, through the Legal Aid Council, had approached the court with an ex-parte application requesting an order compelling the Federal Government or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to move him to either the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja or the Keffi Custodial Centre in Nasarawa.
In the application, Kanu sought to be transferred to any correctional facility within the jurisdiction of the court, including Suleja or Keffi, to enable him effectively pursue his pending appeal.
However, Justice James Omotosho on Monday declined to grant the request, holding that such an order could not be made without affording the Federal Government the opportunity to be heard.
The judge consequently directed Kanu to convert the ex-parte application into a motion on notice and to properly serve all relevant parties in line with the principles of fair hearing.
The matter was adjourned to January 27, 2026, for the hearing of the motion.
Further details are expected as the case progresses….
