Afrobeats superstar Davido has explained why he used his performance at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup to draw global attention to Nigeria’s worsening kidnapping crisis, saying the protection of citizens’ lives should take priority over safeguarding the country’s image.
The singer said he seized the international platform to highlight the abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State.
As part of the awareness campaign, Davido wore a custom-made outfit featuring the names of the kidnapped victims, a symbolic gesture intended to draw international attention to their plight and keep the incident in the public eye.
Speaking in a recent interview, the award-winning musician criticised what he described as the unwillingness of some influential figures to openly address the country’s security challenges.
He argued that preserving Nigeria’s reputation should never take precedence over speaking out against crimes affecting innocent people. “A lot of people do not want to talk about what is happening in my country because they want to protect a lot of images. Which image is there to protect if little children are being kidnapped?” he said, insisting that human lives are far more important than public perception.
Davido said that while performing on one of the world’s biggest stages was an honour, he believed he had a duty to amplify the voices of those who could not speak for themselves.
He further maintained that celebrities and other public figures have a responsibility to speak out on humanitarian and security issues, particularly when the lives of vulnerable people are at stake. At the time he made the remarks, the abducted pupils and their teachers were still missing.
