No fewer than 10 people lost their lives, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred on Sunday night along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident happened around 8:05 p.m. at Saapade Bridge and involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) truck and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number EKY 290 YM.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Odunsi, a total of 18 people were involved in the crash, comprising 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child.
He said 10 victims—nine adult males and one male child—died in the accident, while six others, made up of four adult males and two adult females, sustained injuries of varying severity. Two adult males escaped unhurt.
The FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.
Odunsi explained that preliminary findings revealed the truck driver attempted to reverse on the highway after missing his route, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, tried to squeeze through the limited space before crashing into the truck.
“A total of 18 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child. Sadly, 10 persons lost their lives, while six sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash was caused by speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.
“The truck driver reportedly reversed on the highway after missing his direction, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to navigate through the limited space available and rammed into the truck,” he said.
Odunsi added that FRSC rescue teams responded promptly, evacuating the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
He said officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Ishara Division have taken custody of the damaged vehicles, while arrangements have been made to remove them from the road.
The wreckage has since been cleared, restoring the free flow of traffic along the highway.
Meanwhile, the Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations, stressing that strict adherence to traffic regulations and the use of designated turning points could prevent avoidable tragedies on the nation’s roads.
