The Edo State Police Command has arrested three bouncers and a suspected pepper spray supplier in connection with the disruption that occurred during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The Command also confirmed the arrest of a police officer accused of unlawfully discharging tear gas in a separate incident that allegedly resulted in the death of a resident.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Eno Ikoedem, expressed concern over the increasing proliferation and unlawful use of restricted security equipment, including pepper spray and tear-gas canisters, by private individuals, vigilante groups, bouncers, and unauthorised security outfits across the state.
According to the statement, the Command strongly condemns the possession and use of such devices without proper training or regard for public safety, warning that their misuse endangers lives and can lead to public disorder.
The police recalled that on May 25, 2026, a police officer attached to the Command allegedly discharged tear gas unlawfully at Ogida, Benin City, resulting in the death of a citizen.
“The officer involved was immediately arrested and subjected to disciplinary and criminal procedures in line with extant laws,” the statement said.
The Command further disclosed that pepper spray was unlawfully discharged by private bouncers during the Children’s Day celebration held on May 27 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, causing panic among children and other attendees.
Following investigations, police arrested three suspects identified as Ifeanyi John Paul, 36, Ola Ibikunle, 46, and Onoha Chukwuoji, 33, for their alleged involvement in the incident.
Investigators also arrested Mrs. Rebecca Hassan, who is alleged to have supplied the pepper spray used during the event.
The police noted that the unauthorised use of pepper spray, tear gas, and similar devices could amount to assault and, in severe cases, result in grievous bodily harm or death.
The Command warned private security personnel, bouncers, vigilante groups, and unauthorised organisations to desist from possessing or using restricted security equipment unlawfully.
It further cautioned that anyone found in possession of prohibited security accoutrements, including distributors, suppliers, and sellers, would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that it would not tolerate any action capable of threatening public peace and safety in Edo State.
