MONACO SACK COACH POCOGNOLI AFTER MISSING OUT ON CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Agency Report

French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco have parted ways with head coach Sebastien Pocognoli after less than eight months in charge, following the club’s failure to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The principality club announced on Monday that its collaboration with the 38-year-old Belgian manager had come to an end at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign, despite Pocognoli still having one year remaining on his contract.
Monaco finished seventh in Ligue 1, a disappointing outcome that saw them miss out on Europe’s premier club competition. The club will instead compete in the UEFA Conference League play-offs next season.
“AS Monaco announces the end of its collaboration with Sebastien Pocognoli at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season,” the club said in an official statement.
Pocognoli was appointed in October 2025, replacing Adi Hutter after leaving Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
Although Monaco endured a difficult start to the campaign, the former Belgium international guided the team into contention for a top-three finish with an impressive 10-match unbeaten run. However, a poor end to the season derailed their Champions League ambitions.
The departure also affects his coaching staff, with assistants Kevin Mirallas and Artur Kopyt leaving the club alongside him. Reports indicate that three other members of the backroom staff were dismissed in recent days.
According to reports in the French media, former Chelsea FC and Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis is the leading candidate to replace Pocognoli.
The 40-year-old Brazilian coach left Flamengo in March after guiding the club to the Copa Libertadores title last year and is now reportedly being considered to lead Monaco into the 2026/27 season.
