The Lagos State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day for public servants across the state in commemoration of Isèse Day.
The directive was contained in an official circular, Ref. No. CIR/HOS/’26/057, signed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro.
The annual observance is aimed at promoting, preserving and celebrating the rich indigenous Yoruba culture, traditions and spiritual heritage of the state.
Under the directive, all Lagos State public servants and government offices will be closed on Thursday, with official activities expected to resume on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.
The circular was distributed to ministries, extra-ministerial departments, local government areas (LGAs), Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), parastatals and state-owned tertiary institutions across the state.
The government said the declaration reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to promoting indigenous customs and providing institutional support for traditional institutions and cultural expressions.
Isèse, which means “tradition” in Yoruba, has gained increasing recognition across several South-Western states. The annual celebration provides traditional worshippers with an opportunity to engage in prayers, cultural performances, traditional rites and communal activities aimed at promoting peace and unity.
Accounting officers across the state public service have been directed to ensure compliance with the directive and give the circular wide publicity.
