IYABO OBASANJO RETURNS TO PDP AFTER BRIEF EXIT FROM APC

Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, made her return on Monday during the unveiling of the PDP deputy governorship candidate in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
She was received by party members at the PDP secretariat shortly after former Group Business Editor of The PUNCH, Alhaja Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, was presented as the party’s deputy governorship candidate.
Speaking at the event, Obasanjo expressed confidence in the chances of the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying she would reserve further comments until her formal reception into the party.
“I actually have a lot to say… there are many people that we shall call out, but I won’t say anything now until you organise that official welcome back into the party,” she said.
She, however, praised the party’s candidates, expressing optimism that the PDP would secure victory in the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
“I am convinced that you will be our next deputy governor… and I thank our incoming governor from 2027, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu,” she added.
Obasanjo’s return comes days after she resigned from the APC, citing alleged rejection, maltreatment, and lack of consultation by the party leadership.
In her resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun APC chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, she faulted the process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.
She alleged that party leaders failed to carry stakeholders along in the selection process and also restricted access for her supporters during the announcement of the consensus candidate.
Although she initially accepted the party’s decision and congratulated Adeola, she said subsequent developments and lack of response to her concerns deepened her sense of exclusion, prompting her exit.
Obasanjo joined the APC in January after registering in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
She previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 and represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 before relocating to the United States after her re-election bid was unsuccessful.
