JUST IN: GERMAN PRESIDENT MEETS LAGOS START-UP ENTREPRENEURS
At the conclusion of a two-day visit to Nigeria, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was given an overview of the country’s thriving startup ecosystem on Thursday.
Five young businesses showed Steinmeier their proposals in Lagos, the commercial centre of Nigeria.
They included a financing platform that gives business owners access to funds and a health platform built on an electronic insurance card.
With half of its inhabitants under the age of 18, Africa’s most populous nation has emerged as a hub for the continent’s startup sector.
Young businesses in the tech and IT industries have benefitted greatly from the Nigeria Startup Act, which went into effect in October 2022.
During a meeting with Nigerian entrepreneurs, Steinmeier called for closer bilateral cooperation.
“Germany is still the country of modern technology; Nigeria is rich in resources and a creative young generation,” he said.
“We are perfect partners. So let’s realise our potential.”
Before his onward flight to South Africa, Steinmeier, a former German foreign minister, met the Nigerian writer and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
His four-day trip to three African countries will also include a visit to Lesotho.
