The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has launched a statewide essay competition for secondary and tertiary institution students, with a total prize pool of ₦2.8 million.

The party said the initiative is designed to encourage youth participation in governance and public policy while giving young people an opportunity to contribute ideas towards the development of the state.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia, the state secretary of the Labour Party, Chuks Akamadu, described the competition as the first of its kind by the party in Abia State.

He said the initiative reflects the party’s commitment to promoting civic education, democratic values and responsible political participation.

“The competition aligns with the Labour Party’s commitment to promoting equal opportunity, social justice, civic education and responsible political participation.

“It is aimed at stimulating intellectual engagement among young Abians while generating practical ideas and policy recommendations that can contribute to governance and development.

“We are embarking on this initiative because the Labour Party recognises its responsibilities in a democratic society. We remain committed to educating citizens, promoting democratic values and encouraging greater youth involvement in the political process,” Akamadu said.

He announced that the essay topic is “The New Abia and Need for Consolidation.”

According to him, the competition is intended to gather the views of young people on the achievements of Governor Alex Otti’s administration and explore ways to sustain the progress recorded so far.

Akamadu explained that the competition is divided into two categories.

In the secondary school category, the winner will receive ₦500,000, while the second and third-place winners will get ₦300,000 and ₦250,000 respectively.

For tertiary institution students, the overall winner will receive ₦1 million, while the second and third-place winners will take home ₦500,000 and ₦250,000 respectively.

He added that outstanding participants outside the top three would receive consolation prizes, while the schools attended by the winners would also be specially recognised.

Akamadu said essays, which must not exceed 1,500 words, should be submitted electronically to the party’s official email address on or before July 17, with the prize presentation scheduled for August 3.

He also commended Governor Alex Otti for what he described as the achievements of his administration over the past three years, noting that the progress made inspired the initiative.

“The future of Abia belongs to our young people. Through this competition, we are giving them a platform to contribute meaningfully to the political and developmental conversations shaping our state,” he said.
