LAGOS GOVT INTENSIFIES MONITORING OF HOUSING PROJECTS ACROSS THE STATE

The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has stepped up oversight of contractors handling major housing developments across the state, warning that projects must be delivered on schedule or face sanctions.
The warning came during an inspection of the Lagos State Housing Estate Sangotedo Phase II project and two joint-venture housing schemes within the Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate. The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, led the tour alongside the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, and other senior officials of the ministry.
During the inspection, the commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work on some of the projects and stressed the need for contractors to meet agreed deadlines.
The visit was part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to assess construction progress, monitor project implementation and ensure the delivery of quality housing infrastructure to residents.
Speaking at the Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, Akinderu-Fatai disclosed that four housing projects comprising more than 600 units are currently under construction within the estate.
“We have four ongoing projects in the Abraham Adesanya Scheme, with over 600 housing units in total. We identified some technical issues that require immediate attention, and we are determined to accelerate the pace of work,” he said.
He noted that the ministry would promptly address the technical challenges to prevent delays and keep construction activities on track.
At the Sangotedo Phase II Housing Scheme, the commissioner expressed confidence that the project would be completed within the next few months.
“For Sangotedo, we expect completion by October or November. We are also committed to ensuring that both the Abraham Adesanya and Sangotedo projects are completed before the end of this administration,” he stated.
According to him, the completion of the developments will boost Lagos State’s housing stock and advance the government’s goal of providing affordable, decent and sustainable housing for residents.
Akinderu-Fatai also underscored the importance of contractor accountability, stressing that the government has provided the financial and technical support needed to ensure timely delivery.
“The contractors must intensify their efforts because the government has given them the necessary support to complete these projects. If any contractor fails to perform satisfactorily, we will replace them,” he warned.
He reiterated that the ministry would continue to closely monitor progress and take appropriate action where necessary to ensure contractual obligations are fulfilled.
Addressing concerns over previous delays, the commissioner attributed some setbacks to inflationary pressures that affected the construction sector but maintained that the challenges had largely been overcome.
“We would have completed these projects earlier if not for the impact of inflation. Fortunately, we have addressed those challenges and are now fully back on course,” he said.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering housing projects that adhere to modern standards of quality, safety and sustainability across the state.
The Ministry of Housing stated that it would continue to strengthen its project monitoring framework, maintain close engagement with contractors and consultants, and ensure that ongoing housing developments are completed in line with the administration’s development objectives.
According to the government, the inspection exercise underscores its determination to expand access to quality housing, promote sustainable urban development and fulfil its commitment to providing critical infrastructure that enhances the living standards of Lagos residents.
