The Kwara State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity over the alleged abduction and murder of a 29-year-old student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Sodiq Durodola Olaniyi.
The command said the arrests followed weeks of intelligence-led investigation by operatives of its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) into the student’s disappearance.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the investigation uncovered the circumstances surrounding the victim’s disappearance.
According to her, the suspects are 23-year-old Adeoye Babatunde, popularly known as “Solar”, 25-year-old Bernard Kayode, alias “KK”, and 27-year-old Owoyemi Bashiru, alias “GDP”.
She said the trio was arrested on Monday during coordinated tactical operations carried out at identified cult hideouts across Ilorin metropolis.
“Acting on credible intelligence and sustained investigation, VCRU operatives on Monday, June 29, 2026, conducted coordinated tactical operations on identified cult hideouts within Ilorin metropolis, leading to the arrest of Adeoye Babatunde Alimi, alias ‘Solar’; Bernard Kayode, alias ‘KK’; and Owoyemi Bashiru, alias ‘GDP’,” the statement said.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that the suspects are members of a violent cult group allegedly responsible for the abduction of Olaniyi, an indigene of Oyo State who had been missing since June 4, 2026.
Ejire-Adeyemi disclosed that the suspects confessed during interrogation to their respective roles in the crime and admitted that the victim was executed after he was abducted.
She added that investigations further revealed the criminal gang comprises 12 members, with nine other suspects still at large.
The police said tactical operations had been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects, dismantle the criminal network and recover the victim’s body.
The spokesperson also stated that the suspects currently in custody were providing investigators with useful information regarding other violent crimes allegedly committed by the group within Ilorin metropolis.
She assured that investigations were ongoing and that all those found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The latest arrests come amid renewed concerns over cult-related violence in Kwara State, particularly in Ilorin, where rival cult groups have been linked to a series of deadly attacks in recent weeks.
On June 15, at least four persons were reportedly killed and two others injured in a suspected cult-related shooting around the Post Office area of the state capital, prompting intensified security operations by the police and other law enforcement agencies.
