The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA) has partnered with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) to deploy facial recognition and fingerprint technology as part of efforts to improve suspect identification and enhance security operations across Lagos State.

Speaking during a recent meeting between the two agencies, LASRRA General Manager, Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, said the agency’s biometric database was developed to eliminate multiple registrations by capturing the unique facial and fingerprint characteristics of every resident.

She explained that LASRRA’s database is aligned with the framework of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and serves as a complementary system for residents who have not yet obtained a National Identification Number (NIN).

The General Manager of LNSA, Ifalade Oyekan, disclosed that discussions had previously been held on integrating biometric technology into the agency’s security operations. He revealed that LASRRA had donated facial recognition devices and rechargeable fingerprint scanners, which would be used to identify suspects and offenders apprehended during security activities.

According to Oyekan, the technology will significantly boost forensic investigations by helping security personnel accurately match fingerprints with facial identities, especially in cases involving repeat offenders. He added that images captured through the agency’s drone surveillance operations could also be cross-checked against biometric records, improving the speed and accuracy of suspect identification.

He further stated that the agency’s Forensic Unit would oversee and coordinate the biometric identification process.

Describing the collaboration as a major step forward in intelligence gathering, crime prevention and public safety, Oyekan commended Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Deputy Governor, Kadri Hamzat, for their continued support for technology-driven initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s security framework.
