The Lagos State Government has launched disciplinary proceedings against an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) following allegations that he accepted a ₦20,000 bribe from a suspected environmental offender.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development on Friday, stating that the officer’s alleged actions were inconsistent with the standards and values expected of public servants.
According to the commissioner, the officer has been issued a formal query, while a Personnel Management Board will be set up to investigate the allegations in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
Wahab explained that the decision followed the circulation of a viral video purportedly showing the officer receiving money from an offender.
He reiterated the state’s firm stance against corruption, stressing that any public official found guilty of misconduct would face the appropriate sanctions.
The commissioner also cautioned residents against offering bribes to government officials, noting that both the giver and receiver are liable under the law.
A query letter issued to the officer alleged that he collected ₦20,000 from an offender and that the incident was recorded and shared on social media.
The letter described the alleged act as corruption and extortion, categorising it as serious misconduct under public service regulations.
The officer has been directed to provide a written response within 48 hours explaining why disciplinary measures should not be taken against him. Failure to respond within the stipulated period, the letter warned, could result in further action by the authorities.
