The London airspace has been closed with all outbound flights grounded due to a major problem with air traffic control, plunging summer holiday travel plans into chaos

All flights out of London have been grounded due to major issues with air traffic control, plunging summer holiday travel plans into chaos across the country.

The airspace above the capital has been closed impacting all international departures – across all airlines. NATS, the air traffic control service for the UK, issued an alert of a “technical issue” this afternoon.

Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Stansted, Newcastle, Manchester, Gatwick and Luton are among the airports affected. Passengers across the country have shared their frustration on social media, with people saying they’re sitting on the runway with no sign of taking off.

Passengers urged to check their rights

With disruption to flights, some travellers have already seen their flights be cancelled or delayed. But what are your rights if this happens?

Grant Winter, compliance officer at specialist travel insurance provider, Good to go, said: “When you book flights with an airline, you’re essentially entering a contract that means they are required to get you to a certain destination, at an agreed time.

“If they’re unable to follow through with their end, they have a legal duty under UK law, to offer you a full refund or provide an alternative flight.”

Flights covered under UK law include:

  • Flights departing from an airport in the UK, on any airline
  • Flights arriving at an airport in the UK, on an EU or UK airline
  • Flights arriving at an airport in the EU on a UK airline
