OSUN ASSEMBLY CLARIFIES POSITION ON TRADITIONAL COUNCIL CHAIRMANSHIP REPORTS

The Osun State House of Assembly has formally dismissed social media claims suggesting plans to rotate the chairmanship of the state’s traditional council.
The clarification comes after a post appeared on a Facebook page identified as “Ashiwaju Omo Yoruba,” claiming that the legislature was considering correspondence on the matter.
In a statement issued on Monday by Speaker Adewale Egbedun through his Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, the Speaker described the post as false and unrelated to the activities of the Assembly. The statement emphasized that the information did not originate from any official House of Assembly channel.
According to the statement: “There has been no communication submitted to, received by, or acknowledged within the legislative chamber regarding the rotation of chairmanship among traditional rulers in the state. No committee of the House, including the Committee on Chieftaincy Matters, has discussed or scheduled deliberations on such an issue.”
Speaker Egbedun dismissed the report as a deliberate fabrication designed to mislead the public. “This claim is entirely false and a complete fabrication. Neither the Speaker nor the Osun State House of Assembly received or authorised any correspondence on the rotation of chairmanship among traditional rulers,” he said.
He further stressed that the matter has never featured in the Assembly’s proceedings and affirmed that the House conducts its business strictly according to constitutional provisions and established legislative procedures.
Egbedun also warned against the circulation of unverified information on sensitive cultural and traditional matters, describing it as “a calculated act of mischief designed to misinform the public and provoke unnecessary tension.”
The Assembly expressed concern that the Facebook page presented unsubstantiated claims as fact without reference to official records, noting that such misinformation could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions. Members of the public were therefore urged to disregard the publication and similar content from unverified sources.
“Only statements issued through the official and verified communication channels of the Osun State House of Assembly should be regarded as authentic,” the statement concluded.
The Speaker reassured residents of his commitment to transparency and accountability in legislative affairs, adding that the Assembly would continue to protect its institutional integrity against misinformation, fake news, and malicious falsehoods.
