Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old suspected cult member, Yusuf Lamina Adigun, and recovered a locally fabricated pistol loaded with a live cartridge during a stop-and-search operation in the Ijaiye/Ojokoro area of the state.

The arrest, according to the police, forms part of ongoing efforts to curb cult-related activities and other violent crimes across Lagos.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said officers intercepted a motorcycle carrying three passengers during a routine operation.

A search of the occupants led to the discovery of a locally made firearm with one live round of ammunition allegedly concealed by Adigun.

“During the search, one of the passengers, Yusuf Lamina Adigun, a 27-year-old male, was found in possession of a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge,” the statement said.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect admitted to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity.

The Command further stated that Adigun allegedly confessed that he and other suspected cult members, who escaped arrest, were on their way to attack certain individuals before they were intercepted by officers.

“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity. He further disclosed that he and other members of the cult group, who are currently at large, were on a mission to launch an attack on some individuals before they were intercepted by the Police,” the statement added.

The suspect remains in police custody while further investigations continue.

The police also disclosed that efforts are underway to track down the fleeing members of the group and recover any additional weapons that may be in their possession.

Reiterating the Command’s commitment to tackling cultism and violent crime, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai, said intelligence-driven policing and proactive security operations would continue across the state.

He urged residents to remain alert and support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help prevent crime and enhance public safety.
