President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the government and citizens of Kogi State following the tragic loss of several individuals in a maritime accident that took place on Tuesday in the Ibaji Local Government Area.
Previously, the Kogi State Government had confirmed the incident, expressing profound sorrow regarding the boat mishap on the River Niger, which involved traders traveling from the Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State to the Ilushi Market in Edo State.
In a statement released in the early hours Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, characterized the incident as “tragic” and reported that the death toll from the accident has increased to 26.
President Tinubu, in a statement authorized by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, referred to the event as “alarming and tragic,” emphasizing that the victims were individuals pursuing their rightful ambition to achieve a respectable livelihood.
“The President expresses profound sorrow at the unfortunate incident, describing it as shocking and unfortunate, especially as the victims were embarking on their legitimate quest to make a decent living,” the statement indicated.
Tinubu commended the emergency responders at the site and encouraged federal, state, and local emergency services to enhance their efforts in supporting survivors and those affected.
“President Tinubu once again urges operators of water transportation to prioritise safety over financial considerations in their daily business,” Onanuga stated.
The President offered prayers for the eternal peace of the souls of the deceased and for the swift recovery of those injured.
