Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have rescued 23 kidnapped passengers following a swift counter-kidnapping operation along the Ayegunle–Bunu Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The operation was launched in the early hours of June 1, 2026, after suspected bandits reportedly blocked the highway and abducted several passengers travelling through the area. Acting on a distress call received around 3:30 a.m., troops stationed within the Kabba metropolis were immediately mobilised to the scene.
Although the attackers had fled before security operatives arrived, troops quickly launched a coordinated pursuit along the suspected escape routes.
During an assessment of the scene, security personnel recovered two Toyota commercial buses and a HOWO truck abandoned by the roadside.
Tragically, two victims were confirmed dead, while five others sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, Kabba, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The sustained pressure mounted by the pursuing troops forced the kidnappers to abandon 23 captives, who were later rescued unharmed.

Troops have since intensified search-and-rescue operations across the area in a bid to locate and safely recover any remaining victims still in captivity.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of operation and pledged continued collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders to strengthen security across Kogi State and the country.
The public has also been urged to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information to relevant authorities.
