TWO DIE IN REFUSE DUMP COLLAPSE

Two people have died after a trash pile collapsed in Ikot Effanga, near Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.

The local police released a statement on Friday, signed by their public relations officer, Sunday Eitokpah, confirming the incident.

The statement said the collapse happened early on Friday.  The falling trash hit a building that was built in a valley area.

The police said they arrived quickly at the scene and found that the fallen trash had hit the building, causing two people inside to lose their lives.

The statement identified the victims as Nfon Imé, male, and an unidentified female, who were said to have been in the building at the time of the incident.

Their bodies were recovered and deposited at the mortuary.

“The deceased, identified as Nfon Imé ‘m’, and a yet-to-be-identified female, believed to have been in the building at the time of the incident, have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary,” the statement added.

The police spokesperson said an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident was ongoing, while further investigation had commenced.

“The command is currently conducting an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident, while further investigation is ongoing. Further details will be communicated as soon as they are verified and available,” the statement added.
