Newcastle United were denied a memorable first-leg win in their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash after Barcelona salvaged a stoppage-time equaliser. Lamine Yamal converted a late penalty to secure a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park on Tuesday.

Harvey Barnes had given the Magpies the lead with just four minutes remaining, finishing calmly from Jacob Murphy’s assist. However, Malick Thiaw conceded a penalty in the final moments after tripping Dani Olmo in the box, allowing Yamal to step up and deny Newcastle a valuable first-leg advantage.

The draw ended Barcelona’s four-game winning streak across all competitions and leaves the tie finely poised ahead of next week’s return at the Nou Camp.

Newcastle had started brightly, with Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga both testing Barcelona keeper Joan García in the opening 15 minutes. The visitors weathered the early pressure and gradually grew into the game, with Dan Burn nearly deflecting a Fermín López delivery into his own net.

The first half stayed closely contested, with Anthony Elanga’s cross just missing William Osula at the back post as Newcastle pressed for a breakthrough but couldn’t find the decisive touch.

After the restart, Newcastle maintained the pressure, with William Osula forcing a shot over from Lewis Hall’s through ball. Barcelona threatened in response, though Robert Lewandowski unusually missed, sweeping Raphinha’s cross wide.

Jacob Murphy nearly made an impact off the bench, volleying over from 12 yards, before Harvey Barnes rattled the post in the 74th minute. Joelinton’s follow-up was correctly ruled out for offside.

Harvey Barnes struck four minutes from time, volleying home from Jacob Murphy’s delivery to send the Gallowgate End into rapturous celebrations.

The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Malick Thiaw’s late foul on Dani Olmo in stoppage time gave Lamine Yamal the chance to equalise. The young Spaniard calmly converted, leveling the tie.

Both sides will now turn their attention to the second leg in Catalonia next week, with the tie finely poised.
