WIKE: FCT TRANSFORMATION CAN’T BE ACHIEVED IN JUST TWO YEARS
BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has articulated that it is impractical to anticipate his administration’s ability to revolutionize every sector in the FCT within a mere two-year timeframe.
Wike expressed this viewpoint during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, where he tackled issues surrounding infrastructural deficiencies, education, healthcare, and transportation, encouraging Nigerians to cultivate a more tempered perspective on governmental timelines and priorities.
“For instance, I am referring to the prevailing conditions in this country that are exceedingly poor.
“Every educational institution striving to enhance access to education, we do not wish to engage in discussions concerning the quality of education. ”
Everyone desires for the university to be situated within their locality. No one has inquired about the quality of these two universities you are offering.
“All you seem to care about is establishing universities in every location, disregarding quality,” he remarked.
The minister elucidated that while residents yearn for the tangible presence of infrastructure in their neighborhoods, there is minimal emphasis on the standards or sustainability of these establishments.
“I would prefer to have three universities, for instance, and then you may discuss the caliber of those institutions or schools,” he remarked.
Wike also mentioned the current rehabilitation of general hospitals throughout the Federal Capital Territory. He stated that it would be unfeasible to establish fully equipped hospitals in every district within a two-year timeframe.
“I fail to understand why anyone would expect that within two years in office, there would be a general hospital in every community. That is simply not feasible,” he expressed.
Regarding the transport system in the FCT, Wike acknowledged its “disorderly” state but maintained that efforts were underway to restore organization.
“You reference the transport system; it is indeed disorderly. We are exploring what measures we can implement to bring it to order, which we have already commenced,” he emphasized, adding that it is unjust to presume that all issues could be resolved instantaneously.
Wike candidly remarked, “This is merely two years in office. It is not feasible to overhaul all sectors within such a short span. It is not feasible. ”
” But that does not mean any sector should be neglected. And we’re not neglected.”
As stated by the minister, efficient administration requires a strategic framework with a definitive approach to addressing challenges in each sector.
“A government must be proactive and focused. From this timeframe to that timeframe, this is what we intend to accomplish in this domain. ”
“During this phase and the subsequent phase, this is our intended course of action in this domain. That is the manner in which government is meant to operate,” he clarified.
When asked why his mandate secretaries are rarely seen engaging the public or addressing concerns directly, Wike pushed back, saying it was not the media’s place to dictate his communication approach.
“So they’re not satisfied with what I’m briefing them? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You have your own time to go to them and ask them questions.
“You will not counsel us regarding public visibility or interviews,” Wike responded.
The minister further emphasized that he upholds a stringent supervisory position over his secretaries and project endorsements.
“I must express that this is quite unjust. If you inquire whether my office oversees the mandate secretary, that would indeed be exceedingly inequitable.
“You are well aware of my role. I allocate funds for your utilization. And then you question if I supervise?
“Do I appear to be someone who would remain confined to the office? I believe it is quite unfair for you to assert that,” he stated.
Regarding education, Wike revealed intentions to commence the inauguration of completed and rehabilitated school projects throughout the territory, allowing the populace to recognize these advancements, while highlighting that the FCT is making significant progress in enhancing educational infrastructure.
Wike further clarified that he does not engage in elaborate ceremonies for school projects as it is unnecessary, unlike those for roads and other endeavors.
