Awoniyi Hails Gent Fighting Spirit In Belgian Cup Win Vs Excelsior

KAA Gent forward , Taiwo Awoniyi, is happy with the fighting spirit exhibited by the team in Wednesday’s Belgian Cup 4-2 win against Excelsior Virton.
Gent trailed 2-1 going into the final 12 minutes of the sixth round tie at the Stade Yvan Georges, but they fought back to overturn the deficit and advanced into the next round.

Awoniyi grabbed a brace in the encounter with another Nigerian, Philip Azango notching up an assist.

“We have fought hard. The goals came through the efforts of my teammates. We are working hard in training and I am glad that it has paid off,” Awoniyi told the club’s official website.
Awoniyi who is on loan at Gent from English Premier League side, Liverpool, also recalls how he and teammates bagged the heart-lifting comeback win after trailing in the closing stages.

“We didn’t panic . This is football and we knew anything can happen. We just kept on believing and we won. I will be happy for a long time to come,” he added.
Awoniyi also hopes to be among the starters in Gent’s league clash against Antwerp on Sunday.
“You always hope so, but that choice lies with the coach. I keep working hard and then we’ll see,” he said.
