Nigerian-born Primeiro d’Agosto of Angola star midfielder Ibukun Akinfenwa has reiterated his decision to remain with the Angolan giants who suffered a shocking preliminary round elimination from the CAF Champions League.
 
The Angolan Army team had won 4-2 against Congolose side AS Otoho in the first leg but suffered a 2-0 loss away and got knocked out on the away goals rule but Ibukun reckons that’s not enough to dump the team.

“I still can’t explain what happened in that game because we played our hearts out not minding that we won the first leg well, but we were unlucky to concede that last minute goal which knocked us out. However, this team is better than that one result and we will strive to win the league again this season so that we can be on the continent again next season,” Ibikun began in a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com.
Primeiro d’Agosto made an impressive run to the semi-final of the competition last season – losing 4-3 on aggregate to eventual winners Esperanze of Tunisia – and there were high hopes of going one step better this campaign before they faltered, a fact not lost on Ibukun.
He said: “After last season’s run, we needed to prove that it was not a fluke by doing better this year, but it was not to be. It was not for a lack of trying but we can’t do anything about that again. We shouldn’t cry about split milk but we should rather face the future and make it count.”
The playmaker, who’s allegedly being wooed to change nationality to play for the Angolan national team, is contracted to the club until 2020 and is keen to see out his current deal.
“My contract is until 2020. I’m happy at the club and they’re very happy with me. My family is settled here and I see no reason to uproot them and leave Agosto. I see myself staying here for a long time and to give my best each time I put on the jersey,” he said.
The 28-year old was voted the best foreign player in Angola two seasons ago.
