Moses Simon and Akinkunmi Amoo, two Super Eagles midfielders, have made the list of finalists for the Confederation of African Football Awards 2022.

Sadio Mane, the champion of the Africa Cup of Nations, and Mohammed Salah, a former teammate at Liverpool, made the list of nominees for male footballers, which CAF revealed on Thursday.

The only player from Nigeria to receive a nomination for Player of the Year (Men) was Simon, who plays for FC Nantes in France.

The Jos-born winger was essential to Nantes’ 2021–2022 season, during which time they placed tenth in Ligue 1 and defeated Nice in the Cup Final to claim the title.

Amoo, on the other hand, was one of nine players who were nominated for Young Player of the Year (Men).

The 20-year-old moved from Swedish club Hammarby, where he won the Svenska Cupen in 2020, to FC Copenhagen, where he won the Danish Super Liga in the 2021/22 season.

Amoo competed for Nigeria at both the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the CAF U-17 AFCON in 2019 and was later promoted to the senior team.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, who plays for Napoli in the Italian Serie A, was notably missing from the 30-man Men’s Player of the Year category.

Osimhen and the Super Eagles were eliminated by Tunisia in the Round of 16 in the 2021 AFCON and failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, The Gambia, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia all made the cut for the Men’s National Team of the Year nomination, leaving Nigeria out.
