Mancester United forward Mason Greenwood, has been denied bail and remanded in custody after appearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. All charges are related to the same woman.

The 21-year-old was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He had been on bail since but was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions. The attempted rape is alleged to have taken place in October 2021.

Members of Greenwood’s family sat in a full public gallery in the small courtroom, along with members of the press.

Wearing a grey hooded Nike jumper and grey jogging bottoms and flanked by two dock officers, the footballer, of Bowdon, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Between November 2018 and October of this year, he is said to have engaged in controlling and coercive behaviour, including accessing and monitoring the complainant’s social media accounts and making threatening and derogatory comments towards her.

The charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.

The forward, who has made one appearance for England, was prohibited from playing or practising with the Old Trafford club hours after the allegations went viral online at the start of the year.

Greenwood’s sponsorship deal with Nike was put on hold and later terminated, and Electronic Arts confirmed that he had been dropped from the active squads in its FIFA 22 game.
