Fire has razed a communication mast belonging to a telecommunication firm located at Billy Okoye Boulevard Street, Agu-Awka, Awka., Anambra State.

Eyewitnesses attributed the fire, which occurred on Friday, to bush burning that spread to the location of the mast.

It was gathered that the fire completely damaged the generating set of the mast before men of the Anambra State Fire Service arrived at the scene to prevent it from spreading to other locations.

The state fire chief, Martin Agbili, confirmed the incident, saying that the fire was later controlled and extinguished.

Agbili said, “At about 12.25 pm on Friday, the Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of a fire outbreak in an MTN mast at No 69, Dr Billy Okoye Boulevard Street, Agu-Awka.

“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and gallant firefighters to the fire scene. The fire was later fought, controlled and extinguished.

“The generator at the mast site was completely damaged but other equipment at the site was saved.

“The cause of the fire was careless bush burning which spread to the mast.”

Similarly, another late-night fire incident razed a residential building at No 2, Rockland Estate (Ngozika Estate extension), Awka, on Friday.

It was gathered that the fire started from the topmost parts of the building and razed it completely before the firemen arrived at the scene.

Agbili, who also confirmed the incident, said, “At about 10.57 pm on Friday, the state fire service, received a distress call of fire outbreak at a residential home at No 2 Rockland Estate (Ngozika Estate extension), Awka.

“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and gallant firefighters to the fire scene. We later fought the fire, controlled and extinguished it completely.”

He said the cause of the fire was a power surge which emanated from the master bedroom, adding that his men withdrew from the fire scene at about 1.50 am on Saturday

“Fire extinguishers could have saved that building after the owner saw the fire emanate from his room before taking minutes to spread. We later advised them accordingly.

“Time of distress call will always determine the response time. If you call in, we will locate the fire scene in time to do the needful,” he added.
